You’d be surprised what a difference picking up one piece of trash can make in the bigger picture.

That’s the premise behind Litterati, an organization that uses social media to identify, map and collect the world’s litter. The concept is the brainchild of Jeff Kirschner, one of the newest Dockers® Challengers – self-starters with big ambitions defining new ways for themselves.

As we gear up for Earth Day on April 22nd, learn more about Jeff’s work and how the clean-up influencer has turned his idea into a global movement.

What is Litterati?
Litterati is a community that’s using crowdsourcing to clean the planet. We’re leveraging mobile technology to photograph and identify the world’s litter with the goal of leaving the world better than we found it. We believe that individually you can make a difference, but together we can create an impact.

How did you come up with Litterati?
I didn’t — my kids did. I was hiking through the woods when my 4-year old daughter pointed out a plastic tub of cat litter in a creek. That eye-opening moment reminded me of a lesson I learned as a kid at summer camp. On visiting day, each camper would pick up five pieces of litter [and soon enough, the site would be clean]. I thought, “Why not use mobile technology to apply that crowdsourcing model to the world?”

What’s next?
Dockers® and I are working to raise awareness by creating the biggest CLEAN message in the city of Oakland. We’re challenging governments and manufacturers to find more sustainable resources.
